About the Artist

J. Sanford, ArtistI have been a fixture at the Portland Saturday Market for many years and my original paintings are now in 31 foreign countries and in 49 of the 50 U.S. states.

Over the years I’ve gradually moved from traditional landscape painting to bold and striking landscape features, sky and foliage.

I am intrigued with interesting color combinations in landscapes and seascapes, always considering unusual and exciting color variations that are not necessarily found in nature.

A 100% self-taught artist, I have not studied art or taken art classes — just trial and error, mostly error.

My first customers were friends, neighbors and relatives (I don’t give anything away) and now I have reached a world-wide audience. I’m too old to question the reasons why people repeatedly buy my work. I simply feel blessed that someone pushed me into this activity when I was in my mid-fifties and today my paintings are displayed in homes and offices on every continent on earth.

If you can dream it, you can paint it. If someone likes it, you can sell it. If you sell it (and many more) you will experience what I have experienced for over 30 years. I do not know when I will do my last painting but I am living with the satisfaction of knowing that my paintings are scattered around the world.
